The art of Claude Monet (1840-1926) is the epitome of Impressionism. Throughout his long career as a painter, he tirelessly sought ways to depict the ever-changing nature of light and color in its many atmospheric variations and at different times of day. Monet has been described as the inventor of colorful dreams beyond the visible. But he was much more than that, always striving to realize his ideal of painting outdoors—en plein air. For his painting, what mattered most was how he saw, not what he saw.
