Around 230 exhibitions from Picasso's lifetime recorded, all of such outstanding importance that they were included in historical records. These exhibitions grew in significance over time; by 1973, Picasso had participated twice in the Venice Biennale (1950 Biennale 25, 1960 Biennale 30) and three times in documenta in Kassel (1955 documenta 1, 1959 documenta 2, 1964 documenta 3). However, it was only after his death that his work truly began to unfold its full impact.

The few exhibitions during his lifetime are contrasted to over 2,300 important post-mortem exhibitions, in all the old and all the newly established centers of contemporary art, across the world.

Biennials still like to feature Picasso; he was represented at the 37th Venice Biennale in 1976, the 38th in 1978, and the 46th in 1995. In 2005, Picasso conquered China, with his work being featured at the 2nd Beijing Biennale. Documenta exhibitions also favor him; Picasso was included in documenta 6 in 1977 and documenta 8 in 1987.

The current exhibition figures are available online, and the numbers are changing rapidly (now, here, today, in 2023, with an artist who has been dead for 50 years); I didn't check for a few days, and the number of recorded Picasso exhibitions has risen from 2536 to 2564 – it's hard to imagine a more vivid illustration of how the Picasso myth lives on!

When and where will Picasso exhibitions take place in 2023?

In 2023, the Picasso Year – on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death – numerous special exhibitions around the world will be dedicated to the dazzling artistic genius Pablo Picasso.

Spain, in particular, will be honoring Picasso's work and legacy this year with multifaceted exhibitions in Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona, A Coruña, and Bilbao. The renowned painter and sculptor, an icon of the Iberian Peninsula, demonstrated incredible creativity throughout his life and left behind over 50,000 works of art, including paintings, prints, collages, sculptures, and ceramics.

He was also active as a stage designer and poet. His most famous work, “Guernica ,” an anti-war painting, remains relevant and well-known today, as does “Les demoiselles d'Avignon,” which refers to the seedy Calle de Avinyó in Barcelona.

His admiration for the world of actors and performers was reflected in his melancholic blue and rose periods . His countless portraits of his many muses, lovers, and models revolutionized the art world.

To celebrate the anniversary, 16 exhibitions will take place in five Spanish cities closely associated with Picasso's life. As part of the "Picasso Celebration 1973-2023" , more than 50 exhibitions will be organized worldwide, with Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona, A Coruña, and Bilbao playing a central role.

Spain and France simultaneously declared a spirit of cooperation that will lead to a series of Picasso exhibitions in Madrid, Bilbao, and Barcelona—particularly focusing on the dialogue between Picasso and Joan Miró . In the spring, Paris will with “Picasso and Prehistory” Musée de l'Homme , followed in the autumn by : “Gertrude Stein and Picasso: The Invention of Language” at the Musée du Luxembourg and “Picasso: 2023 Drawings” at the Centre Pompidou .

In Italy, the focus is on Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica" (→ Picasso: Guernica ); in Japan , European-Israeli collections are showing what treasures they contain.

The USA , along with Western Europe, is a major destination for learning about the work and life of Pablo Picasso. Starting this spring, the exhibition “Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds” tour Charlotte, Cinconnati, and Denver . Some of the most important presentations in America include “The Young Picasso in Paris” at the Guggenheim Museum , the “Paintings for Hamilton Easter Field” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art , and “Picasso in Fontainebleau” at MoMA .

Málaga – Picasso's birthplace

Málaga was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the son of a freelance painter named Ruiz. Picasso himself wasn't particularly fond of his father's art, which consisted of subjects like partridges, doves, rabbits, and flowers. However, it was in Málaga that he created his first oil painting, titled "El picador," when he was just nine years old. His later dove of peace became one of his most famous works.

The Picasso Museum in Málaga "Dialogues with Picasso" collection , which traces the painter's development through various phases of his life. Located in the Buenavista Palace, the museum offers visitors a chance to learn more about this great artist.

A Coruña – Artistic Development

Pablo Picasso lived in A Coruña, Spain for five years during his childhood, after his father accepted a position as an art teacher at the Instituto da Guarda. From 1894 onward, Picasso began keeping diaries under the names La Coruña and Azul y Blanco ("Blue and White"), illustrating them with portraits and caricatures.

This period was a pivotal moment in the artist's development, as he began his art studies and lost his sister – an event that would forever shape his life. To honor Picasso's time in the city, the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña presents the exhibition "White Picasso in Blue Memory ," comprised of approximately one hundred works, which explores the painter's connection to Galicia.

The city council of A Coruña is also planning to renovate the first floor of the Picasso Museum House at Calle Payo Gómez 14, the artist's residence during his time in A Coruña. It was opened in 2002 to raise awareness of the artist's connection to the city.

Exhibitions in A Coruña:

Barcelona – Picasso's first exhibition

In 1895, when Pablo Picasso was 14 years old, his parents moved from A Coruña to Barcelona, where his father obtained a position at the art academy "La Llotja." The 14-year-old passed the entrance exam in just one day, clearly demonstrating his artistic talent. His father subsequently set up a private studio for him.

Barcelona was a key location in Picasso's artistic development; not only did he receive a solid academic education there, but it also provided him with a wealth of artistic inspiration that set him on the path to modernism. Furthermore, he forged numerous friendships that kept him connected to Barcelona throughout his life.

After a brief stay in Madrid, Picasso returned to Catalonia in 1898 and was allowed to exhibit "Els Quatre Gats." "Le Chat Noir ," was a hub of the modern art world. Following the death of his close friend Carles Casagemas in 1901, Picasso began his melancholic Blue Period , which he spent in his studio at Riera de Sant Joan 17. The ground floor of this building housed "Els Quatre Gats," located in the Casa Martí—a building designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch on Carrer Montsió in the center of Barcelona.

  • Picasso and Spanish Ceramics (July 1–September 30, 2023) → Barcelona Museu del Disseny
  • Miro – Picasso (10/19/2023–2/25/2024) → Barcelona Museu Picasso + Barcelona Fundacio Joan Miro

Madrid – A Time of Emancipation

Picasso spent the years between 1898 and 1901 in Madrid, where he broke away from his parents' home and simultaneously attended the Royal Academy of San Fernando. His dissatisfaction with the teaching methods led him to leave the school after a short stay and begin his career as an independent artist.

He used the time to visit various artists' haunts, explore museums, and boost his self-confidence by changing his signature from "Ruiz" to "P. Picasso." Today, Madrid is known for its vibrant cultural scene, which offers a unique diversity thanks to the "Art Triangle," with its numerous museums such as the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum.

It will present a selection of sculptures covering a wide range of styles the artist has used to expand the forms of the human body, as well as materials ranging from wood to bronze, iron, cement, steel, or plaster. This exhibition was previously shown in Málaga.

Picasso 2023 in France

Fernande tells the story: Picasso and his friends (until February 19, 2023)

→ PARIS Musée de Montmartre

Fernande Olivier (1881-1966), a progressive woman, began her career as a professional model for many artists and became world-famous as the partner of the young Picasso. She encouraged his artistic development from the Blue Period to Cubism. As a writer, she describes life in Montmartre at the beginning of the 20th century, including Picasso and his Catalan circle of friends, as well as the bohemian scene of the Bateau-Lavoir.

An exhibition is being dedicated to her life for the first time, illustrating some of the most important events of the avant-garde based on her writings. It illuminates her role as a woman, artist, and model, and offers fascinating insights into the difficult process of emancipation at the beginning of the 20th century.

Picasso / Poussin / Bacchanale (until March 5, 2023)

→ LYON Fine Arts Museum

This exhibition follows on from the exhibition "Poussin et l'Amour" at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, which closes on March 5, 2023. It explores Poussin's role in the development of Picasso's sensual and erotic vision . His Bacchanalia from 1944 provides a starting point for examining Picasso's perspective on Poussin's work.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, Picasso intensively explored the rituals and relationships of Dionysus. This exhibition also offers the opportunity to relate Picasso's Bacchanalia, which he produced during the German occupation, to the photographs and accounts that made Picasso famous at the time of the liberation.

Picasso and Prehistory (February 8 – June 12, 2023)

→ PARIS Musée de l'Homme-Museum national d'histoire naturelle

Since October 2022, the Musée de l'Homme has been presenting the season "Art and Prehistory," including the exhibition "Picasso and Prehistory." This exhibition explores the influence of prehistoric art on the work of the artist, who was deeply moved by the discovery of cave paintings, rock engravings, megalithic monuments, and Paleolithic Venus figurines at the beginning of the 20th century.

A total of 40 paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and pebbles engraved by Picasso are exhibited and shown in dialogue with original exhibits and reproductions from prehistoric times.

Célebration Piasso: La collection prend des couleurs (7.3.-6.8.2023)

→ PARIS Musée National Picasso

In 2023, the Musée national Picasso-Paris appointed British fashion designer Paul Smith as its curator of the collection. He unveiled a new version of the permanent exhibition, featuring a special combination of masterpieces from the museum's collection and works by contemporary artists, followed by a largely chronological tour through Picasso's complete oeuvre, highlighting some of his most emblematic moments and themes.

Picasso 1969–1972, the end of the beginning (April 8–June 25, 2023)

→ ANTIBES Picasso Museum

Of the 23 volumes in Christian Zervos's Picasso catalogue, 13 focus on the last 20 years, demonstrating just how productive the artist was during the last two decades. Picasso's creativity was particularly intense after 1968, between 1969 and 1972. At 90 years old, painting was for Picasso primarily an act of desire.

The zest for life, expressed in his very last paintings in vibrant colors and mostly on a large scale, testifies to Picasso's extraordinary creative power in his later life. They also reveal his often overlooked talent as a color expert. His skills as a color master were on display at an exhibition in Avignon in 1970 and 1973.

In his later years, Picasso returned to familiar figures and themes. With youthful energy, he produced paintings that give the impression of inviting painting itself, "stronger than he was and doing with him what it wanted," on new adventures. The end of a beginning.

Goya in the Eye of Picasso (June 30 – October 1, 2023)

→ CASTRES Goya Museum

The exhibition “Goya in the Eyes of Picasso” explores the connections between the works of these two Spanish artistic titans and, above all, the influence Goya had on Picasso's art. Picasso constantly engaged with the themes that were particularly important to Goya, from bullfighting to his political works in which he denounced the injustices of the world.

A selection of drawings, prints, lithographs and photographs explores the connection between the two artists and showcases the expertise and power of their works.

Picasso in the Lambert Collection, 50 years later in Avignon (July 13–October 15, 2023)

→ AVIGNON Collection Lambert

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Picasso's death and the 1973 Papal Palace exhibition, the Lambert Collection is showing a dozen of his works from his final creative period. Works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Miquel Barceló, Julian Schnabel, Nan Goldin, and Andrés Serrano are also on display, creating a dialogue with Picasso's pieces.

Basquiat , Barceló, and Schnabel have focused particularly on Picasso's final creative period. They emphasize how his painting style and attitude toward painting had a significant influence in the 1980s. Works by Goldin and Serrano can also be linked to this final resurgence in Picasso's work.

À toi de faire ma Mignonne. Sophie Calle at Musée Picasso (1.8.2023–28.1.2024)

→ PARIS Musée National Picasso

Since the 1970s, numerous exhibitions worldwide have been dedicated to the work of Sophie Calle. A conceptual artist, photographer , and video artist who sometimes saw herself as a detective, she uniquely combined text and video. Her artworks form a vast network of internal connections and references, interwoven like the chapters of a book.

She successfully blurs the lines between public and private, fiction and reality, artificiality and life. Sophie Calle meticulously orchestrates an underlying reality—her own or that of others—while simultaneously allowing space for chance occurrences.

Gertrude Stein and Picasso: The Invention of Language (September 13, 2023 – February 21, 2024)

→ PARIS | Musée du Luxembourg : Gertrude Stein and Picasso

This exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg offers an insight into Gertrude Stein's life. It illustrates her friendship with Picasso and her connections to the Parisian art scene, especially during the years of "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" and Cubism, with a wealth of Picasso artworks and archival material.

The presentation is rounded out by works from Warhol , Bruce Nauman , Roni Horn, and Glenn Ligon, which emphasize the diverse effects of their dialogue. The exhibition, designed by Cécile Debray, President of the National Picasso Museum in Paris, is structured into four main sections: places, objects, portraits, and words.

Modernism and Classicism (16.9.–10.10.2023)

→ MONACO Prince's Palace / Palace of Monaco

When remnants of frescoes dating back to the late Renaissance were discovered in the Prince's Palace in 2015, Prince Albert II began the conservation and restoration of the venerable decorations of the Palais princier.

In the new salons of the Grands Appartements, the exhibition “Modernity and Classicism” brings together studies and works by Picasso with the historical decor of the Palais de Monaco.

The Paris of Modernism 1905–1925 (17.10.2023–28.4.2024)

→ PARIS Musée du Petit Palais

In the early years of the twentieth century, Paris attracted many artists from around the world and was considered a center of cultural influence. The scandal surrounding the "Fauvists" at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 and the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925 marked the beginning of an era of modernism.

This era is brought to life and made visible through fashion, film, photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, dance, design, architecture, and industry, all of which represent this modernity. Pablo Picasso played a central role in this.

Picasso. 2023 Drawings (18.10.2023–22.1.2024)

→ PARIS Centre Pompidou

The 2023 Picasso Drawings exhibition is the most comprehensive retrospective of his drawings and prints ever exhibited. The artist had an ever-growing predilection for the power of line, ranging from serpentine strokes to shading and composition. In addition, visitors can admire the pastel tones and the intense black of his ink.

The exhibition is based on the collection of the National Museum Picasso-Paris and was inspired by the artist's notebooks. It breaks with the systematic chronology, allowing for a comparison between masterpieces and drawings exhibited for the first time.

These are not all of them, far from all; even in the aforementioned countries, many locations and further collections in the cities mentioned are missing where a Picasso can be publicly admired. Besides the holiday destinations mentioned, there are 11 other countries that display Picasso's artworks in public collections.

What is striking is that around 40 of these countries exhibit a form of government with distinctly democratic features, meaning over 90 percent. Of the approximately 190 countries in the world, only around 50 percent are classified as democracies (according to various political science measurements of democracy).

Leaving aside any highly complex theoretical-scientific considerations, it can be stated with regard to these figures that art and democracy have something to do with each other, and at least do not negatively influence each other.

Universally present: Picasso's art in our world

How present Picasso is in our world quickly becomes clear when one looks at the prices paid for his art today. We're talking about almost unimaginable sums; many of Picasso's paintings play leading roles in record lists of the art world

's "Boy with a Pipe" from 1905 fetched $104.2 million at Sotheby's , making it the most expensive painting in the world at that time. Its price has since dropped slightly, but other Picasso works have taken its place. Picasso appears several times on the list of the world's most expensive paintings as of January 2015.

The 1932 painting “Nude with Green Leaves and Breasts” currently the sixth most expensive painting in the world, having at Christie’s . “Dora Maar with Cat” from 1941 is currently the eighth most expensive painting in the world, having fetched $95.2 million at Sotheby’s in 2006.

Then the descendants of other painters were able to enjoy some places in the ranking, but from number 30 onwards, Picasso has everything firmly under control again:

  • The “Woman with Folded Arms” from 1902 was sold for $55.0 million at Christie's in 2000, No. 32.
  • No. 35 is the “Portrait of Angel Fernández de Soto” from 1903, auctioned for $51.8 million at Christie's London in 2010.
  • No. 36 is “Pierrette’s Wedding” from 1905, $51.6 million, 1989, Binoche et Godeau
  • No. 37: “Seated Woman in the Garden” from 1938, $49.5 million, 1999
  • No. 39: “Yo, Picasso” from 1901, $47.9 million, 1989
  • No. 41: “Femme assise pres d'une fenetre” from 1932, $44.8 million, 2013
  • No. 51: “Nature morte aux tulipes” from 1932, $41.5 million, 2012
  • No. 53: “Au Lapin Agile” from 1905, $40.7 million, 1989
  • No. 54: “La Lecture” from 1932, $40.7 million, 2011
  • No. 61: “Acrobat and Young Harlequin” from 1905, $38.4 million, 1988

Picasso is among the 70 most expensive paintings sold in the world with 13 works, with a total sales sum of almost 768 million dollars – that's no small sum for 13 paintings.

Both the sales figures, from 1988 to 2013, and the dates of the paintings, from 1902 to 1941, demonstrate the enduring popularity of Picasso's works, from his earliest pieces to those of his sixty years. Only his very late works have yet to be fully discovered by high finance, but even these "bargains" are beyond the reach of the average person…

Against this backdrop, one could justifiably question the naivety of the electrician who, in 2010, “found 271 works by Picasso” and claimed, astonished, to have known nothing of their value of around 60 million euros (you can read this amusing story in the SPIEGEL ONLINE article: Sensational find in France: 271 unknown Picasso paintings discovered).

Picasso for “normal” people

The recently compiled list mentions 13 Picassos, valued at $768 million, of which nine disappeared from their private owners and were never seen again. Of the remaining four Picassos, one was bought by a Japanese investment banker, but after his bankruptcy three years later, it vanished into the vault of the bank that provided the funds and has not resurfaced since.

The next one was bought by a shipowner whose home country charged its shipowners almost no taxes for 45 years, but now has to be supported by all taxpaying citizens of the EU; we have all essentially paid for a piece of this Picasso in the “10th most important private collection worldwide”.

The third disappeared into the inaccessible rooms of a Japanese department store chain; only one of the 13 Picassos was donated by its wealthy owner to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after three years of private enjoyment, thus making it accessible to everyone again.

12:1, a poor ratio for the average citizen; if “high art” continues to disappear into private collections at the same rate, our children will probably only be able to see a few outstanding works of art…

Before that happens, you should probably see a Picasso in a museum; here are a few tips for enjoying Picasso on a budget: There are few artists whose works have been marketed in more posters, calendars, prints, postcards, etc., and you can still buy these items today (ideally from a small, transparently tax-paying trading company whose owner hardly ever buys up the last remaining Picassos).

You can experience, read, see and play Picasso in many other ways:

Biography of Patrick O'Brian

There are countless biographies of Picasso, but Patrick O'Brian presented an exceptional one: Pablo Picasso. A Biography . Publisher: Hoffmann & Campe Verlag GmbH, July 1985, ISBN-13: 978-3455088908.

Patrick O'Brian primarily presents reactions from Picasso's environment; relatives, friends, gallery owners, art dealers and journalists have their say and paint a much more comprehensive picture of the time and the artist than Picasso, who placed so much value on his private life, would have allowed us to see.

Biography of Sir John Richardson

Sir John Richardson , British art historian and critic, and arguably Picasso's most important biographer was a friend of Picasso from around 1948. Richardson has presented a four-volume Picasso biography, the last volume of which has not yet been published: A Life of Picasso, Vol. 1: The Early Years, 1881-1906 , Vol. 2: The Painter of Modern Life, 1907-1917 , Vol. III: The Triumphant Years 1917-1932 .

In paperback: A Life of Picasso: The Cubist Rebel, 1907-1916 , The Prodigy, 1881-1906 , The Triumphant Years, 1917-1932 . These volumes were published in 1991, 1996 and 2007 and each described one to two decades of Picasso's work.

This biography has its own fascinating story: Richardson is said to have paid more for the image rights than he earned from the sales of the first three volumes. Nevertheless, the fourth volume is to be published, a challenging task for the author, born in 1924: Volume IV is to describe Picasso's life from 1933 until his death in 1973. Richardson has four decades to cover and has undertaken this work at the age of 83.

The final volume was intended to contain some surprises about Picasso that no one had published before. This volume was originally slated for release in 2014. In November 2014, Richardson received hundreds of unpublished photographs and even videos of the “private Picasso” , to include in this biography.

Unfortunately, Richardson passed away on March 12, 2019 in New York City, before he could publish this highly anticipated fourth volume.

Biography of Jaume Sabartés i Gual

The Catalan Jaume Sabartés i Gual Picasso.

The Spanish sculptor, writer, and poet was a lifelong friend and long-time private secretary of Picasso. Jaime Sabartés is the author of, for example, “Picasso. Conversations and Reminiscences. With 17 Portraits and Drawings by Picasso,” published in 1956 by Arche Verlag Zurich, and the biography “Picasso: Toreros ,” published by André Sauret, Monte-Carlo, in 1961.

Personal recollections from his wives

Anyone wishing to gain insight into Picasso as a person could also consult the accounts of his wives, for example, Fernande Olivier's *9 Years with Picasso: Memories from the Years 1905 to 1913 *, Diogenes Verlag, 1957; Fernande Olivier's * Picasso and His Friends: Memories from the Years 1905–1913 *, Diogenes Verlag, new edition 1989, ISBN 978-3-257-21748-3; or Françoise Gilot's * Life with Picasso *, Diogenes Verlag, 23rd edition 1987.

Films about Picasso's life

A few Picasso films, apart from the usual documentaries, that examine Picasso's life from this, that, and yet another completely different perspective:

“Le Mystère Picasso” (1956), directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot (“The Wages of Fear”). This film about the “Picasso miracle” illuminates the working methods of this multifaceted and fascinating artist in a way that is both impressive and entertaining. In this documentary, you can watch Picasso live at work , often creating artworks that can only be seen in this film.

“F is for Forgery” (Vérités et mensonges, 1976) deals with Picasso from an unusual perspective: that of the art forger Elmyr de Hory, who in the middle of the last century forged countless masterpieces (including some by Picasso) and sold them to well-known museums, without them ever suspecting that they had fallen for a forgery.

Orson Welles directed this quirky masterpiece , with a screenplay by Welles and Oja Kodar (who allegedly had an affair with Picasso). The cast includes Orson Welles (as himself), Oja Kodar (as a girl), Joseph Cotten, François Reichenbach, Richard Wilson, Paul Stewart, Sasa Devcic, Gary Graver, Andrés Vicente Gomez, Julio Palinkas, Christian Odasso, Françoise Widhoff, Peter Bogdanovich, William Alland, Elmyr de Hory, Laurence Harvey, and Clifford Irving. Released in Germany on January 30, 1976, the DVD has been available since April 7, 2006. A co-production between France, Germany, and Iran.

“Picassos Äventyr” (The Adventures of Mr. Picasso, 1978), directed by Tage Danielsson , is a Swedish comedy that ironically summarizes the painter's life. A quirky and humorous film, truly polyglot with (mostly internationally understandable) terms from ten languages, it deserves attention.

These were by no means all the books and films that deal with Picasso – research doesn't have to be long to find a study of Picasso and his relationship to any topic in the world.

You can enter anything into the search engine, from “Picasso+nude” (or abyss, alchemy, wisdom of age, Avignon…) to “Picasso+number” (or drawing, cymbal, shaggy hair, sugar loaf…), you will always find a publication on the topic.

The “On-line Picasso Project”

Once you have read all of this, you can learn more about the artist on the “Online Picasso Project .” This was launched in 1997 as an academic publication supported by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, USA. The General Editor is Prof. Dr. Enrique Mallen ( picasso.shsu.edu ).

There you will find 25,156 cataloged artworks, 12,734 painting reviews, 6,394 comments on Picasso's art, a list of 1,158 Picasso collections, 12,241 biographical entries, 1,055 biographical comments, 4,669 selected references, and 13,979 archived articles by or about Picasso…
