about art in Brazil when we hear about an unusual art project or a Brazilian artist receives a prestigious art prize. Neither of these things happens very often. But that doesn't mean the Brazilian art scene has anything to hide.

On the contrary: Art is booming in São Paulo and elsewhere. This is one of the reasons why a recent video art project received the public attention it deserved.

Project Video Guerrilha in Sao Paulo

Art magazines and online portals are currently featuring a spectacular art project from São Paulo. In the street art project “Video Guerrilha,” the Brazilian city of São Paulo itself becomes a museum space – at least for three days and within a single street.

This also allows us, as laypeople in the art world, to learn more about contemporary video art in Brazil. Video art can be seen on the facades of buildings along Augusta Street in the artists' quarter of São Paulo. Outdoor art can also introduce art to people who are hesitant to visit museums.

This also creates a colorful kaleidoscope of video-related art in Brazil.

What the participating video artists from Brazil project onto the building facade is entirely up to them. It's clear to everyone that video-based outdoor art works best at night. Strolling along the Augusta Street, where the installations are taking place, the existing architecture and public space are suddenly transformed by the installations and placed in a different context.

One might take a closer look at the depicted subject, the house, or the artist behind the installation. The fact that the video art project is taking place on Augusta Street is no coincidence. This street once represented São Paulo's notorious and drug-ridden red-light district. Today, however, it is reserved for theater producers, musicians, and bar owners. As a trendy neighborhood , this location was ideally suited for staging outdoor art.

The “Video Guerrilha” project not only conveys visual impressions on building facades, but also aims to promote Brazilian video art itself through museum workshops and gallery events. Later, this art project can also be seen in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília .

Brazilian art has long been rooted in religion and has traditionally focused almost exclusively on sacred themes. Now, however, its artistic themes can also be found on the street. Brazilian artists have long since moved beyond the margins of the art world and have been able to establish themselves as prominent figures.

Art fairs and Brazilian galleries are primarily frequented by American buyers looking for new talent.

On the Spiegel Online website you can find an impressive photo series about this project via the following link: Spiegel Online photo series on “Video Guerrilha”.
