Early examples of the Oseberg style are sometimes distinguished in art historical literature as a separate Berdal style; also named after its place of discovery, which in this case is in Norway.

Whether Berdal style or Oseberg style; these early examples of sculpture in Scandinavia, which are dated to around 800 to 850 BC, certainly have their own unique charm:
